I guess it depends on what stage of life you are at

as a child my dog was a great friend - she listened to all my secrets and never told on me, we hiked miles together and found all kinds of cool things (well maybe the porcupine wasn't quite so cool in hindsight)

as a young adult my dog helped me mature - accept responsibility for another living soul and make choices that weren't always entirely about me - good training for life

I'll start at the happy end of the story - Sally is still with us and enjoys life like no other dog I've met!

I have been helping animals in need since I was about 7 - a cat followed me home one day and stayed in our yard ... we put up posters and canvassed the neighbours looking for her home but had no luck.  My grandparents (where we were living at the time) wouldn't allow animals in the house so I had to find Miss Kitty a new home. More posters and three weeks later we had a home for her! ( she lived on the back porch in the meantime)
